Why Electrolytic capacitors cannot be used for higher frequencies?


Capacitors like electrolytic type are constructed using roll type. In a roll type, two strips of the metal foil are separated by a dielectric material. Due to this construction, the Effective Series Inductance (ESL) is high. This ESL is the reason why they cannot be used for higher frequencies especially RF applications. Same if the case with film capacitors. 

To give some input regarding the capacitor construction, they can be mainly classified as,
  • Roll type construction
  • Stack type construction
