MVIO in Microcontrollers

MVIO in Microcontrollers

What shall we do when we want to connect a 3.3V output from a micro controller to an IC which is powered 1.8V input. We level translate the 3.3V to 1.8V and then connect it to the IC. Now, if someone tells you that there are already micro controllers in the market which can support multiple voltage levels? Yes, AVR128DB28 is one such micro controller from Microchip which supports this feature called MVIO. MVIO stands for Multi-Voltage I/O.

As we can see from the below snapshot from AVR128DB28, there are I/O with different supply options VDD and VDDIO2.

As can be seen from the electrical characteristics of AVR128DB28, we can see different voltages connected to VDD and VDDIO2.

If the designers doesn't want to utilize level conversion technique, VDD and VDDIO2 can be shorted to a common rail.
