SDIO interface short for secure digital Input/output is a high speed, low power interface for connecting MMC cards, devices like BLE, Wi-Fi, GPS. As we can see, SDIO is very popular in wireless chip sets and can be used as host interface. SDIO can be said as extension of SD card. SDIO has Clock signal, Command signal and 4-bit wide data bus. SDIO can be used in various modes:
- 1-bit SD mode - as name says single data pin will be used for communication
- 4-bit SD mode - all 4-bits will be used
In SDIO, the clock is initiated by host as like other interfaces. The clock speed can go as low as 400 kHz and can reach up to 208 MHz. SDIO is used for communication between host device and slave device and slave responds to the commands generated by the host. Protocol analyzers are available for debugging the SDIO interface.
