What is Acoustic Overload Point (AOP)?

Microphone is one of the important interfaces used in embedded systems. Performance of microphone is very crucial to the functionality of such embedded systems. For example, take the case of ear phones, headsets, phones, etc where audio quality is very important. One of the important specification of microphone which determines the performance under noisy conditions is Acoustic Overload Point. Acoustic Overload Point is called AOP in short. AOP is defined as the sound pressure level at which THD exceeds 10%. We are taking about the Total Harmonic distortion (THD) as the distortion is measured using this parameter. If the AOP is reached, signal cannot be distinguished from noise. So, AOP must be as high as possible. AOP is measured in dBSPL.

We can see the below specification which shows the AOP from the microphone datasheet ICS-40638.
