Which protection option is preferred - Capacitor or Diode?

Below is one of the common scenarios we see in the relay design. There is a protection element involved to help relay have a conductive path when the supply voltage is suddenly cutoff.

We see two scenarios above where:

  • Diode is used
  • Capacitor is used
Diode is very commonly used, where we work with DC power scenarios. In this scenario, diode shall be OFF when the voltage is supplied to coil and diode shall be ON when the voltage is turned OFF.

Coming to the case of the capacitor, it can handle any scenario like the AC voltage or the DC voltage but the response time is little more than the diode scenario as the capacitor charges slowly. To eliminate this charge/discharge time scenario, lower value capacitor is used.
