What is SoftAP?

We all have routers in our homes using which we connect to the external world for browsing. The router here acts as a Access point and helps to connect to the device accessing internet. In some cases, we have Wi-Fi hot spot in our home to which we connect and then this further connects to router. In this case, we login to this access point using it's SSID and Password and not the actual router credentials. One example could be accessing the internet using the hot spot from your mobile.

In the above description when we talk about router, it could be Wi-Fi Router or Wired Router or Wi-Fi+Wired router and this connects to Internet. We at home connect our laptops, mobiles to this router. While we talk scenarios at home, in offices, we have several Wi-Fi devices used in a building and all these connect to a router which further helps to connect to internet. These Wi-Fi devices are called Wireless Access points which help to connect devices to routers.

Soft ware enabled Access Point is something which acts as a router. The actual functionality of this device is some other but it can be used as a access point by it's software. One example is ESP8266 which supports SoftAP.
