Solid State Batteries

Solid State Batteries

Batteries are the major source of power for portable electronics. Lithium-ion batteries are the most popular batteries used in mobiles, laptops and any commercial hand held devices. Lithium ion incorporates a liquid electrolyte between the Anode and Cathode and is always a cause of concern with respect to safety. So, your circuit needs monitoring circuits to track over charging, over temperature and these circuits do occupy space on the board and also is a firmware overload. One important development in the recent years on the batteries is the use of solid electrolyte which include solid polymers replacing gel polymers. The reason for liquid based electrolytes to survive for this long is because of the good conductivity of them.

With the current advances in the Electric Vehicle Segment and need for safe and reliable battery, solid-state batteries are gaining importance. As the technology is in the preliminary stage, costs associated are higher. But one cannot brush aside the advantages of higher densities and safe operation.

Advantages of Solid State batteries include:
  • Better operational life
  • Safe and stable operation
  • Higher Energy Density
  • Higher Battery Voltages
  • Saves lot of space for a given battery requirement when compared with lithium ion battery
  • Fast charging is needed for EV segment. It's just not EVE, even for mobile batteries, we hear fast charging announced as major feature. For EV, this charging time is very important
  • Obviously, more environment friendly than liquid electrolyte option
  • Due to better efficiency, for a bigger battery packs, need for cooling requirements might be relaxed
