What is NVMe SSD?

What is NVMe SSD?

NVMe stands for Non-volatile Memory Express and is a PCIe based solid state drive. As we know, PCIe is one of the fastest interface used for expansion slots and especially pre-dominant in server kind of environment. So, this is where the NVMe dominates performance over the AHCI (Advanced Host Controller Interface) SATA. if we consider PCIe Gen 4, it can transfer up to 16 GT/s. The one in the image we see is a M.2 form factor NVMe. There are other form factors like PCIe Card slot, U.2.

The actual flash memory which is NAND based still holds and it is only the interface that is used to access the flash separates NVMe and SDD.
