Embedded Queries - 4 (Why capacitors are to be placed as close as possible?)

We see lot of recommendations to keep the capacitors as close as possible to the respective pins of the IC? What could be the reason?

If the capacitors are placed far from the respective pin of the IC, the trace between them adds inductance which reduces the effectiveness of the capacitor. Let us take the case of bypass capacitors, which need to source energy as they act as reservoir capacitors, may not be able to source current at a faster pace as required. Also, if the capacitors are close, the trace length connecting the ICs are reduced and hence the chance of picking up unintentional energy gets reduced.
