Electromagnetic Compatibility - Part 11 (FCC vs CE certification)

FCC vs CE: What Embedded Engineers Must Know Before Product Launch

FCC stands for Federal Communications Commission.

Here are the difference between CE and FCC certification:

FeatureCE (European Union/EEA)FCC (United States)
Primary FocusHealth, safety, and environmentRadio frequency interference
EMC TestingEmissions AND ImmunityEmissions ONLY
Safety TestingMandatory (LVD, RED directives)Not required by FCC (often handled by UL)
EnvironmentalIncludes RoHS/REACH complianceNot covered by FCC
ProcessManufacturer self-declaration (mostly)Certification or Supplier’s Declaration

  • CE certification can be self certified by the equipment manufacturer where as FCC requires third party involvement like the certification labs for certification
  • Any device which has electronics operating at frequency > 9 kHz and to be sold in US requires FCC certification
  • If you are in a IoT domain, FCC certification is the one to perform for your product
  • Even though FCC mentions about RF interference, it is not just for wireless devices, it is for any intentional and unintentional radiators.
  • FCC covers range from 9 kHz to 3000 GHz
