When we use ESD protection for high speed interfaces, the capacitance of the protection diode must be very low <1pF. While we get the diodes, it is the placement of the diode which is critical. We see diodes placed on other side of the PCB increasing the capacitance and causing signal integrity issues. Even when placed on the same side as connector, traces must be as short as possible and placed as close as possible. While selecting ESD diodes, we consider
- Extremely low capacitance
- Extremely low leakage current
- Extremely low inductive path to Ground
- Can help comply to required standards
- Smallest possible size
