Termination methods in CAN

Termination methods in CAN

In CAN (Controller Area Network) systems, proper termination is essential to maintain signal integrity and prevent reflection issues. Here are the common termination methods:

1. Standard 120Ω Termination

  • The most widely used method.
  • A 120Ω resistor is placed at both ends of the CAN bus.
  • Ensures proper impedance matching to eliminate signal reflections
  • 120 ohms comes from the twisted pair cable impedance

2. Split Termination (Improved Noise Reduction)

  • Uses two 60Ω resistors with a capacitor (e.g., 10nF) in between.
  • Enhances EMI (Electromagnetic Interference) suppression.
  • Helps in stabilizing common-mode voltages.

Typical value of capacitor is 4.7nF in split termination.
