What is Digital Product Passport (DDP)?

We generally buy a product without knowing much about the details of what materials are use in it, where it is manufactured and what is it's impact to environment? How about getting such details of a product by scanning a QR code?

A digital product passport (DPP) is a digital record linked to a physical product, containing comprehensive information about its life cycle, including manufacturing, materials, environmental impact, and more, accessible via a unique identifier.

DPP is one of the upcoming requirements in the products and a move towards sustainable environment. DPP can facilitate informed consumer choices, improve supply chain traceability, and support the transition to a circular economy by enabling better product design, reuse, and recycling.

The implementation of DPP is guided by the EU's Eco design for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), which came into force on July 18, 2024, with legal enforcement starting in 2026 for batteries.
