Accelerometer plays an important role in embedded applications. Any automotive application cannot be thought of without this functionality. A simple example can be sensing a car tilt and sending an alert if the tilt is more than allowed limit which meant car must have met with an accident. While this is simple application, accelerometer can be used for inertial navigation, vibration measurement, anti-theft and others. Following factors need to be considered while selecting an accelerometer.
- Sensing Axis - X,Y,Z
- Full scale range of measurement - 2g, 4g, 8g, 16g, 32g
- Frequency at which data can be read from the sensor
- Operating Voltage
- Power consumption
- Reading output type - Analog, Digital
- Serial interface - I2C, SPI
- Operating temperature
- Resolution of the reading
- Sensitivity of the reading
- Mounting Package
